St. Patrick's Day Plans?

Here at the press, the Wednesday interns are celebrating St. Patrick's day a little early since we won't be here tomorrow. Candide was nice enough to bring in Irish soda bread, Irish cheese, and some wonderful fresh strawberries! The Press used to have a huge week-long Irish festival featuring Irish dancers, and an Irish film festival, but now we like to keep things pretty mellow.

Not quite in the St. Patrick's day spirit? Check out John Montague's excerpt from the poem The Bread God, found in his book The Rough Field

An Ulster Prophecy

I saw the Pope breaking stones on Friday,
A blind parson sewing a patchwork quilt,
Two bishops cutting rushes with their croziers,
Roaring Meg firing rosary beads for cannonballs,
Corks in boats afloat on the summit of the Sperrins,
a severed head speaking with a grafted tongue,
A snail paring Royal Avenue with a hatchet,
British troops firing on the Shankill,
A mill and a forge on the back of a cuckoo,
The fox sitting conceitedly at a window chewing tobacco,
And a curlew in flight
                                    surveying
                                                     a United Ireland

P.S.-Don't forget to wear your green tomorrow
